Get those favorites under control

Bookmarks and favorites are a great way to take care of your top websites and pages, but as anybody with more than a few dozen will know, they can quickly get unmanageable.

Tidy Favorites is a small program that adds a favorites/bookmarks management function to your browser. It works with IE, Firefox, Opera and Chrome and happily synchronizes if you use more than one browser. The Tidy Favorites toolbar is very discreet, and basically allows you to view the management interface and quickly add a webpage to categorize later. Tidy Favorites makes managing your bookmarks easier by showing a little thumbnail of each page and allowing you to drag and drop items. This thumbnail can be modified to show a different part of the web page, or you can add your own.

The program also allows you to import and export bookmarks from other sources. Tabs along the bottom of the window give you access to your top links, favorites and bookmarks, and you can create new folders and change existing ones by right-clicking within the interface. Oddly, Tidy Favorites seems to make the Tidy Favorites interface the default page for new tabs, and I couldn't find a way to turn it off. There's a search function, but it only searches the internet and not, bizarrely, your bookmarks.

Tidy Favorites didn't really blow my mind. Organizing favorites and bookmarks in a window format, rather than a list, is much easier, but some browsers, such as Firefox, already offer this feature. Some people will definitely appreciate the visual aspect and no one could doubt that individual links are easy to manage.

One particularly nice feature is the ability to add pages you are currently browsing with the plus icon in the toolbar. This effectively places the pages to a holding area, where they can stay until you're ready to organize them. That said, I found the Tidy Favorites layout confusing and unappealing, and the program won't become a permanent feature on my browser.

Tidy Favorites might appeal to some bookmark users, but I just didn't see the point.
